What Impact Does a Nation's Culture Have on the Growth of Networking?

This blog originally appeared in The Huffington Post

I'm looking forward to visiting Vietnam in a couple of weeks to speak at two events about networking and why it is so important. In preparation for my talks I have been asking Vietnamese business owners and expats based there for their views on Vietnamese networking culture and how it compares to the way we network in the West.

BBC Radio 5 Live Interview - Is Networking a Positive Thing?

On Friday afternoon I was interviewed by Colin Paterson on BBC Radio 5 Live in a section looking at the growth of networking in securing jobs and questioning whether networking is a positive thing.

Did you build your network by design or default?

When you built your network, how did you decide to whom you should connect and why?

That may seem like a strange question to many. After all, how many of us set out deliberately to develop a specific network? For most people they evolve naturally, don't they?

Your Slice of the PIE

Yesterday's Women's Hour on BBC Radio 4 featured a discussion on networking as part of this week's International Women's Day.

During the discussion the presenter said, “There is one model for success. It’s called PIE. Performance 10%, Image 30% Exposure 60%, which suggests that networking is absolutely vital.”

Stop! You're wasting your time

I was recently asked to provide this guest blog for Warren Cass's excellent new site, full of social media and networking advice.

What could you be doing instead of reading this blog? Did you pick it up from Twitter or Facebook? If so, how long have you spent on either site today? What else could you have done otherwise?

If you’re going to a networking event later, why are you bothering? You might be doing something far more productive.

What's the Problem?

Much is made of the dreaded 'elevator pitch' and what you say when people ask you what you do. How do you answer that question though? Particularly when it comes from someone who genuinely cares and might be talking to your ideal prospect in their next conversation.

Networks that Fit

Networks, and networking, are thriving in these tough times. More than ever people recognise that they need to look to others for support if they are to achieve their career and business goals.

The ‘dog-eat-dog’ world of business painted by TV programmes such as The Apprentice is not necessarily the way forward in business today. Instead businesses are more likely to achieve positive results through collaboration. Sharing experiences, expertise, ideas and contacts is essential to business success.

Now That’s What I Don’t Call Networking!

Networking is constantly growing in popularity but yet people still make the same mistakes, have the wrong idea or fall into the same traps. Here are ten commonly held networking myths:

Stop playing the numbers

Networking is not a numbers game and I don’t want to be a notch on someone else’s networking bedpost.

A culture has developed around networking where the aim seems to be to gain the maximum number of business cards, connections, ‘friends’ or ‘followers’.
