Now That's What I Call a Great Relationship

It's easy to underestimate the importance of relationships in business. If we get things right the potential is there to be pleasantly surprised by what people will do for us. However, by the time we realise we've got things wrong, it can be too late and opportunities may have already been squandered.

Creating promotion opportunities through internal networks

I recently mentored a young credit analyst from one of the City's major investment banks. She wanted guidance on how to build and develop a network that would help her make progress in her career.

Among her challenges are building the right relationships with her peers and with her immediate boss so that she could count on their support while avoiding the negative aspects of office politics. She also needs to understand how to develop a network in other areas of the bank so that people would think about her if opportunities came up in their teams.

Is 'Sweatworking' really the way forward?

You know something is becoming popular when more and more variations come up, trying to fit it in with other common every day activities. If that's the case, perhaps networking is on the verge of enjoying its moment in the sun.

First we had 'Speed Networking', a rapid-fire series of networking 1-2-1s based on the speed dating concept that became incredibly popular a few years ago.

The Impact of Individual Growth on the Business Community

It's easy to lose sight of the impact that personal development can have beyond the individual concerned.

On Tuesday I delivered a talk to the staff of the West of Sweden Chamber of Commerce in Gothenburg. After the talk I spoke at length with Per Jernow. For the last 10 years Per has been working with the Chamber to bring together senior directors of regional businesses to learn from and support each other.

Quality + Action = Results

I spoke at a sales conference in Sweden a couple of weeks ago and something one of the company's leadership team said stood out for me.

The Power of Networks to Find a New Job

With forecasts of the UK’s economic prospects for 2012 remaining gloomy, the chances are that many more people will be seeking new employment over the course of this year. With more well-qualified people seeking fewer jobs, strong networks will become ever-more relevant, as will a proactive approach.

Simply forget 'what's in it for me?'

When I speak to many organisations about their existing referral strategies, many of them complain that they are giving referrals to Partners but receiving nothing back. Others question whether they should pass referrals in one direction as that company many not be able to reciprocate.

Lean on Me...

As part of Global Entrepreneurship Week, this morning the business minister Mark Prisk announced a doubling in the size of the Mentor SME network. This increase in the mentoring support for entrepreneurs followed hot on the heels of last week's announcement from Theresa May of a new scheme to provide mentors to female entrepreneurs.

It's a Family Affair

Last month I spoke at a Successful Insurance Selling conference in Milan. In preparation for the talk, I discussed the role of the family in business with my interpreter. I then shared her words with the audience, much to their amusement, when I said, "In the UK many people like to separate the family and business; in Italy, the family is the business"!

Harnessing the social networking revolution

The latter part of the last decade has seen a revolution in the way we communicate. The growth of social networking has changed the way we interact with friends, both new and old; how companies engage with their customers and now even shape the way that government policy is set.
