networking skills

What's the Problem?

Much is made of the dreaded 'elevator pitch' and what you say when people ask you what you do. How do you answer that question though? Particularly when it comes from someone who genuinely cares and might be talking to your ideal prospect in their next conversation.

Do you make your reputation.....or do others make it for you?

Following the stream of backbiting and bitchiness in global diplomatic circles revealed on the WikiLeaks website over the last couple of weeks, BBC television's This Week programme asked the question on Thursday night, "Do you make your reputation, or do others make it for you?"

This is a very important question and one that all businesses must take seriously. In many of my talks and workshops I ask delegates how much time they spend working out what they want other people to say about them. No one ever admits to considering this at all.

The Eyes Have It!

Over the years I have often talked about the importance of commitment when networking. Not just commitment to the process, but commitment to the people in the process, and that means giving all of your attention to the person you are in conversation with.

Now That’s What I Don’t Call Networking!

This article originally appeared in The National Networker

Networking is constantly growing in popularity but yet people still make the same mistakes, have the wrong idea or fall into the same traps. Here are ten commonly held networking myths:

Adding extra bite to your networking

Many businesses struggle to understand how to sell to people in their network when the perceived wisdom (emphasised by people such as me) tells you not to.

The Right Card Trick?

One of the biggest challenges for any business when networking is how to get your message across effectively about what you do. This is particularly difficult when you have more than one proposition for more than one audience.

Networking by Numbers.....or how NOT to run a networking event

I really thought networking events had moved on. It turns out that I might have been wrong.

I met with a corporate lawyer this morning. Earlier this week he attended an event run by his local Chamber of Commerce. The event was billed as 'Networking by Numbers' and, as he outlined the format to me, I was horrified.

Lost Connection? How smart phones could transform networking

Michael Schrage, in his Harvard Business Review blog on Thursday, put forward the interesting idea that smart phones may soon be the tool of choice at networking events. Instead of the fumbling elevator pitch where people struggle to explain what they do, business people can instead take out their smart phone and show people.

Stop playing the numbers

Networking is not a numbers game and I don’t want to be a notch on someone else’s networking bedpost.

A culture has developed around networking where the aim seems to be to gain the maximum number of business cards, connections, ‘friends’ or ‘followers’.

Multi Channel Networking

What do you want people to say about you?

What is your core message?

With all of the opportunities to network, both online and at events, and with an ever-more blurry line between what is 'professional' and what is 'social', keeping a clear vision in your mind of how you want to be perceived has become increasingly important.
