Michelin Star Relationships

If you find it hard to approach people or build genuine relationships at a traditional networking event, perhaps there is another way.

Over the last few weeks I have been fortunate enough to run three small events for some of my clients and close network. I’ve run the events in association with Aveqia, a Swedish business taking their first steps overseas with a launch in London. The feedback has been quite extraordinary, consistently the best feedback of any events I’ve run or experienced.

People Buy Passion

Last week a client told me how something I said in one of my workshops indirectly led to his departure from his position at the time. In a referrals strategy session I asked whether you are more likely to refer someone who visibly believes in the company and the product or service they advance. It was clear from the feedback that an obvious passion for the business makes a big difference to how referable that business is.

How do you chase up referrals you've been promised?

What do you do when someone has promised you a referral but you haven't heard anything?

It can be a very uncomfortable situation. After all, they've promised to do something for you but there's no obligation on them to follow up. If you press too hard you may well not only lose the potential introduction but damage the relationship you have.

Conversation.....not Presentation

When I was involved in running networking groups, much of the agenda was spent with members delivering presentations. The idea was to enable members to paint a clear picture of who they needed to meet and why and trigger referrals as a result.

Common Ground

Over local delicacies in Hong Kong this evening a friend of mine shared two stories that, while seemingly unrelated, combine to illustrate an important lesson in how we relate to other people.

How to lose friends and alienate people you meet at networking events

Following up promptly after meeting people at events is one of the golden rules of networking. Doing so as soon as possible, while your conversation is still fresh in the minds of the people you have met is one of the ways good networkers start quickly to forge relationships with new contacts.

Note, I mentioned 'forge relationships'. There are still too many people who think networking events are purely an opportunity to sell, and anyone they meet is 'fair game'.

Do You Really Deserve Other People's Support

Are you getting the referrals, the introductions and the support in business that you feel you ‘deserve’? It is easy to get frustrated when we turn to others for help yet find that they are slow in coming forward with the connections or advice that we need. If we work hard, are good at our job and are always nice to people then surely we deserve the help of those around us when we need it?

So what?

When asking for referrals and introductions most people make the same fundamental mistake. We talk about what we want to achieve and why we want to speak to our prospect.

Now That's What I Call a Great Relationship

It's easy to underestimate the importance of relationships in business. If we get things right the potential is there to be pleasantly surprised by what people will do for us. However, by the time we realise we've got things wrong, it can be too late and opportunities may have already been squandered.
