Why You Need a Doggy Bag When Attending Conferences for the First Time

You're heading for a conference for the first time and you know very few people who will be there. How do you make sure that people know you even before they've met you and that they have something more interesting than a less than heartfelt 'what do you do?' to open their conversation with?

Julie Holmes is a professional speaker and communications expert who moved from the United States to England just a couple of months ago. Just a few weeks after arriving in the UK and after just one regional meeting, she went along to the Professional Speaking Association's (PSA) 'MEGA' Convention a couple of weeks ago.

In her spare time Julie is a keen dog trainer and she decided to put one of her highly trained pets, Hungarian Vizsla Seven, front of stage as a conversation starter. She filmed this short video and posted it in the 'Speakers Corner' Facebook group used by many PSA members.

Julie's video was clearly a pre-conference hit judging by the number of people I heard talking to her about it. It meant that she found it so much easier to engage with strangers and feel at home in what is a very close-knit community.

I'm not suggesting that you all thrust random pets into suitcases to capture fellow delegates' attention! But what can you do to make your name known before people have met you?

Is there an online community used by many of the delegates of the conference you plan to attend? If so, how active are you on it? Do you post regular thought-provoking blogs? Are you commenting on and supportive of other posts?

I was working with a client this week who is just back from the UK's largest pensions conference. It was his third time at the conference and his network and confidence is growing each time. My challenge to him this week was not to wait a year to see how much larger his network is but to build his profile in the industry and develop that network throughout the year by blogging, meeting and engaging with as many key influencers from that community as possible.

Conference doesn't start when you arrive, or even when you pack. Build your visibility in advance, people will want to collar you and the event won't be such a ruff experience (sorry)!
