The One Simple Rule to Help You Grab People’s Attention

As a frequent traveller I simply don’t watch airline safety videos. OK, maybe I force myself every now and then to make sure I remember what has constantly been drummed into me over the years but, like many people, I switched off a very long time ago.

The airlines have started to cotton onto this over recent years. SouthWestern Airlines in the US have been clocking up the YouTube hits with their entertaining and often hilarious crew. And on my Virgin Airlines flight this week even I found myself drawn to the airline safety video.

 

 

How have they done this? Well, by making one simple change. They switched who the safety announcements were for. Rather than forcing upon passengers information that the airline and authorities deem important, they have asked themselves what will the passengers want to watch?

The focus has moved to entertainment. Make people laugh and they’ll be hooked. When we board a flight we don’t want to be lectured to or bored with the same old information. If we feel that we know what is coming, we don’t engage.

Surprise and entertain us and we’re in.

So, what lesson can you draw from this for your own communication? Have a look at the messages you share with your network. Are you telling them what you want them to know or asking yourself what is important to them?

When writing blogs or posting videos I often battle with the wording of the headline. I need to find something that will get you to want to give my words your time and attention. Often the simplest headlines work better than the clever puns and wordplay that I personally favour. But I have to decide what’s more important, my smug self-satisfaction or your engagement.

When asking for referrals I carefully consider what relevance I have to the person to whom I would like to be connected and what message will resonate with my Champion, giving them the confidence to make the introduction. I know what I want to achieve but is that message and motivation compelling enough for the connection to proceed?

When telling people what I do and who I do it for I will ask myself what will interest them or make sense in their experience. That doesn’t mean sharing everything because I want to get my whole message across. It means focusing on what will engage and stimulate the other person.

Airlines have shifted the focus from what they want to say and onto what their passengers want to hear. Hopefully I’ve done something similar here….and you can too.
