Go Ahead....Make My Day

I just received a phone call from a client. I am working with this client and his team over the course of a year and we speak fairly frequently between meetings but I wasn't expecting a call from him. It was a call that has made my day.My client called to give me some feedback on some advice that I had given him during our recent mentoring session. He has taken action (which is always good to hear) and taken ninety minutes out of his schedule to reconnect with some key individuals in his network who we had identified. The response from the calls he made was positive beyond his expectations and he wanted to call to tell me.

It's a small thing but that feedback is so important. Once I have spoken, trained, mentored or written that often tends to be it. My bookshelves in my office are filled with thank you cards going back over a decade and I treasure calls like today's but they tend to be few and far between.

That doesn't mean that people don't like, learn from or appreciate my work. I certainly hope not! We're simply not conditioned to say thank you as a matter of course. Perhaps that's why, when we do, it means so much.

Yesterday I posted a thank you card to someone who led a course I've been participating in for the last four months. To be fair though, that's not something I do automatically; she really had gone above and beyond the call of duty. Particularly with me as a delegate!

I have made more of an effort in the last year or two to be more proactive in saying 'thank you'. I've always made it a key function of my referral process but what about saying thank you when people provide an exceptional service?

There are many ways of doing so. Like my client, you can simply pick up the phone. I use Moonpig.com to personalise greetings cards, often with an image relevant to the thank you I'm giving. I've also started posting more reviews on sites like Tripadvisor, not just saying thank you but helping to tell other people about the great service offered.

Over the summer I visited a new pub behind Kings Cross station in London twice. Both times the food and the service were excellent. Particularly the service. On the first visit I called across the manager specifically to praise our waiter.

How often do we do that? We're quick to complain (I know I am) but are we are keen to proactively find the right person to praise people who have delivered a great job?

After the second visit I posted a review on Tripadvisor. <a href=You can read the review here. The General Manager of the pub responded to my review, saying "Thanks so much for your review. Made my day!"

It doesn't take much to make someone's day. Who can you pick up the phone to, send a card to or write a review for now? Take five minutes out and make someone's day.
