The Basics of Getting Going: '...and Death Came Third! 10th Anniversary Guest Blog

Ten years ago, in 2006, Peter Roper and I published the first edition of '...and Death Came Third! The Definitive Guide to Networking and Speaking in Public' on Bookshaker. The book was a big success with over 2,000 copies sold in the first 48 hours alone, a second edition published by Panoma (formerly Ecademy) Press in 2011 and a separate editiion published in Malaysia and Singapore.

Peter and I have consistently been amazed by the affection held for '...and Death Came Third!' by many readers, reflected by the emails and comments we have received from people from a range of backgrounds. The book really focuses on the basics of networking and presentation skills, giving readers simple approaches to working the room at networking events or giving their first talk.

To celebrate this, we have got together with our network to provide a series of short 'Basics' blogs. Over the month of September Peter, Mindy Gibbins-Klein of Panoma Press and I will share a guest blog every day exploring the basics of business, from the basics of confidence and attitude to negotiation and strategy.

We start today with Joy Marsden on The Basics of Getting Going

Whether you’re a business person starting out, a person that’s been running a business for a few years or a seasoned business person; taking the right steps at the right time in the right way isn’t easy.  There comes a time when it’s good to take some time to freeze and reflect and understand what impact the steps you’re taking are having on the future you wish for and the work that you do.

The art of ‘getting going’ or ‘Keep Stepping’ as I call it in my business training is easy to say but not always easy to do.  Here are my 3 tips to get you going and keep you stepping, even when the going gets tough.

Be Persistent

Keep stepping to get the most out of each day. Business people who are actively looking out for opportunities to serve people better, to engage with people more effectively and to improve themselves personally are often more productive.  They’re also willing to do what it takes to make today better than yesterday and are willing to take steps to become more and do more.

Be Objective

See situations as they really are. Often, we can paint a picture of what we’d like things to be but facing up to reality is always a great place to start.  If things aren’t going well; recognising that things need to change is a good place to start.  Once we’ve recognised it, we need to admit it, only then can we start to implement a change where it’s needed.

Be Prepared

Here I’m referring to you preparing ‘YOU’ for what lies ahead.  Do you hold onto grudges?  Are you easily offended? Are you able to forgive and move on? These are very important issues to address and the answers you have to these questions will either set you up to be strong and resilient or set you up to be weak and heavy-hearted.

Let’s face it, difficult times come to us all.  The way we deal with our work colleagues, our boss, our families and our friends, determines the type of the relationship we have with them. Make it easy for people to get along with you, aim to forgive and move on, so that you can take steps forward with a clear conscience and remain strong.

Consider these things as you work each day and Keep Stepping!
