Selfie-Control at the Oscars

 

In many ways I feel sorry for the two PwC accountants who have been named, shamed and banned by the organisers of the Oscars ceremony. One of them made one innocent mistake, albeit one with global repercussions, and they find their names and faces spread across the news media worldwide, huge reputational damage to their firm and their careers facing a major setback, if not in tatters. 

Their experience provides an important lesson for all of us. By all accounts, the error happened because Brian Cullinan, the Chair of the firm's US Board, gave the wrong winner's envelope to Warren Beatty because he had been distracted taking and tweeting a picture of Best Actress winner Emma Stone just before he was due to hand over the award details. 

In today's selfie and social media society, it feels perfectly normal to capture the special moments in our lives. Who wouldn't want to grab and share that backstage view from a ceremony most people only ever get to see on television? Before we laugh too much at their embarrassment, let's put ourselves in their position. 

Social media has also substantially blurred the line that once starkly existed between our professional and personal lives. There are many people who still maintain that strict boundary but for many of us, the two worlds are closely intertwined.

So this is a timely reminder that such a line still exists. On a much smaller and less public scale than the weekend's faux pas, I have seen too many people forget that they are representing their firm or themselves when at conferences, networking events and corporate hospitality functions. 

When the booze flows, celebrities abound and people let their hair down a bit, our defences come down. As our heads get fuzzier, the line between professional and personal gets blurrier. 

It's important to find that balance between enjoying ourselves, bonding with those around us and remembering that we are there to further our professional careers or business relationships. Sometimes that might mean putting down our selfie-sticks and forgetting social media and just being in the moment. 

Unfair as it might seem, we also need to look out for our colleagues. Brian Cullinan's colleague, Martha Ruiz, has faced the same public humiliation and sanction despite the error appearing to lie with Mr Cullinan. We can be tarnished purely by association with someone when they act, even momentarily, in a way that can damage our firm's and their reputation.
